General Electric (GE) has acquired Blade Dynamics, the developer of what are to be the world’s longest wind turbine blades.

Blade Dynamics says that GE’s interest in the company is ”based on its innovative technology which has the potential to radically transform the blade manufacturing process.”

The new technology is estimated to reduce the cost of electricity generation of the new, increasingly bigger wind turbines, particularly for offshore installations, GE believes.

Blade Dynamics is also currently involved in developing the “Advanced Wind Turbine Blade Technology Industrialisation” project which put forward a proposal at KIC InnoEnergy’s Call for Innovation Projects in February 2015.

This project was one of six successful entrants to KIC InnoEnergy’s 2015 Call for Innovation Projects. This call aims to identify technologies which can make a difference in the field of sustainable energy, and support them through the product development process. The next Call for Innovation Projects will open on 15 January 2016.

“The recognition by GE of the potential of Blade Dynamics is a great acknowledgement of the work that KIC InnoEnergy do in identifying and supporting talent in the field of sustainable energy. We’re very proud to have been a part of the development journey for Blade Dynamics,” Antoni Martinez, CTO for Renewable Technologies at KIC InnoEnergy, said.
