Representatives Joe Crowley and Grace Meng joined on Monday, November 30, NYS Senator Toby Ann Stavisky, Council Member Peter Koo and community leaders on a tour of Flushing Bay to see the progress on the dredging of the federal navigational channel.
The tour was led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is undertaking this crucial work to ensure proper navigation of these waters for the future.
Dredging of the navigational channel, which is 15 feet deep and extends the length of the bay, will be completed by the end of the year.
By then, approximately 165,000 cubic yards of material will be removed from the area and transported to an upland facility in New Jersey for disposal.
The project is funded as part of the Army Corps of Engineers’ $12.1 million work plan included in the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act of 2015 (H.R. 83), the legislation that set the funding levels for all federal agencies for fiscal year 2015.
Once complete, the project will allow ships and boats to better navigate through the water, helping to promote and improve everything from trade and commerce to recreation and public safety.
