China’s leading wind power developer Longyuan Power Group Corp has, along with its partners, started construction of the 400MW wind farm off Nanri Island in Fujian province, according to the country’s state media.

The wind farm is expected to be completed in 2018, and have a capacity to produce 1.4 billion kilowatt hours of electricity annually. The Nanri Island averages around 320 windy days per year.

The construction of the wind farm is expected to cost around CNY 8.2 billion (EUR 1.18bn).

The state-owned Longyuan will provide 70% of funds needed for the construction, with Jiangyin Sulong Heat and Power Generating Company covering the remaining 30%.

The project was approved by the local government last month.

China added 35 gigawatts of renewable energy generation capacity in 2014, more than UK, USA and France put together, as the country tries to cut its reliance on coal-fired power.
