The Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) has given Statoil Petroleum its consent to use the COSLInnovator rig for drilling, completion, intervention, workover and well plugging on the Troll field, off Norway.

In a letter sent to Statoil, the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway gave the company its consent for operations in the Troll field in production licenses 054 and 085 until August 2020.

COSLInnovator is a semi-submersible drilling rig constructed at the Yantai Raffles Shipyard in China designed for the North Sea and its harsh environment. The rig was issued with an Acknowledgement of Compliance (AoC) by the PSA in 2012 and has been under contract with Statoil on the Troll field ever since.

The rig is using a new technology called Dual Gradient Drilling , which is, according to Statoil, becoming a necessity, due to the field’s maturity and depletion.

In September this year, Statoil celebrated 20 years of oil production on the Troll field with over 1.56 billion produced barrels.

The Troll field lies in the northern part of the North Sea, around 65 kilometres west of Kollsnes, near Bergen, Norway.
