AW-Energy’s WaveRoller power take-off (PTO) system has been tested at full scale at the WaveRoller Research Center in Järvenpää, Finland.

According to AW-Energy, the grid-connected 350 kW PTO met electricity generation expectations throughout the power matrix.

The Järvenpää Research Centre’s wave machine can generate up to 2 MW of input power, the company states, with the WaveRollers electro-hydraulic PTO connected to the wave machine enabling the testing and fine tuning of the units on dry land.

Utilities world-over have different grid codes and requirements to ensure that the electricity produced into the grid fulfills the requirements concerning quality, and according to AW-Energy, the Järvenpää Research Centre will ensure that each WaveRoller PTO will fully comply with the grid code, wherever in the world the customer is located.

Jussi Åkerberg , Development Manager of PTO at AW-Energy, said: “We have now a world class test facility where we can among other things verify compliance with the grid codes of the full scale device.”

To remind, the Järvenpää Research Center was officially launched in November, and was inaugurated by the President of Finland Sauli Niinistö.

Finland-based AW-Energy has developed a 350 kW commercial scale WaveRoller wave energy device has recently been validated by DNV GL and Lloyd’s Register , and the device is planned for deployment in 2016.
