The subsea cable linking Dong Energy’s 209 MW Horns Rev 2 offshore wind farm with Denmark’s onshore grid was repaired and put back into operation on 18 December, nearly two months after the fault was reported , Energinet.dk said.
The faulty cable put the wind farm out of operation on 19 October. One day later, Energinet.dk pinpointed the malfunctioning part of the cable some 40 kilometers off the coast. The cause of the fault was a short circuit.
The repair teams replaced a 3.6 meter section of the cable, after which the wind farm was once again connected to the grid.
Energinet.dk initially planned to put Horns Rev 2 back into operation by 25 November, but the deadline was pushed by almost a month due to strong winds and high swells which made repair works impossible at times, the national transmission system operator (TSO) said in a statement.
The costs of the repair and the wind farm’s two months of idling have yet to be determined.
The 42km long cable connects Energinet.dk’s platform in the North Sea off Blåvand to the onshore grid in Blåbjerg, north of Henne.
