The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia District, has just released an aerial photo of the ongoing project to deepen the federal channel of the Delaware River and use the material to build a dune and berm at Broadkill Beach, Delaware.
This project involves dredging as needed within the existing 40-foot Delaware River federal navigation channel to deepen it to 45 feet from Philadelphia Harbor, Pa. and Beckett Street Terminal, Camden, N.J. along a 102.5-mile distance to deepwater in the Delaware Bay.
The $76.8 million worth project was awarded to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. Six contracts have been completed; one is under construction; and another has been awarded and is scheduled to begin construction in December.
More than 16 million cubic yards of material will be removed during the project. The bulk of the dredging is being performed by hopper and hydraulic pipeline dredges, with a bucket dredge used for rock removal in the Marcus Hook area.
Around 4 million cubic yards of good quality sand from the Delaware Bay is being dredged and placed for the construction of the Corps’ coastal storm damage reduction project (dune and beach nourishment) at Broadkill Beach.
The target date for completion of the project has been set for 2017.
