ClassNK, a Japan-based classification society, has released industry developments summary for 2015, covering various topics, including marine energy.

The opening paper of this year’s edition of ClassNK’s Technical Bulletin explores the possibilities and challenges of tidal power, offshore wind power, and wave power.

It also outlines tidal power generation systems around the world.

A technical report then takes a look at the trend of ocean energy development in Japan and ClassNK’s initiatives related to the certification of renewable ocean energy power generation devices.

The report states that Japan needs medium and long-term research and development, and demonstration studies in the field of ocean energy, and outlines Japanese government’s ‘Basic Plan on Ocean Energy’.

It states that the Headquarters for Ocean Policy designated six areas in four prefectures as demonstration areas, and adds, that currently, the specific research and development projects run by Japanese government consist primarily of those conducted by the government itself, and New Energy and Industry Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
