Songa Endurance semi-submersible drilling rig has started drilling operations under its contract with Statoil in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea.

The rig’s owner Songa Offshore broke the news on Thursday, saying that the rig “is now on operating rate”.

The Songa Endurance is on an eight-year drilling contract with Statoil at the Troll oil and gas field, around 65 kilometers west of Kollsnes, near Bergen. The rig is the second in a series of four Category D semi-submersible drilling rigs, specifically built for and contracted to Statoil.

Bad weather at Troll

The area where the rig is located has been hit by harsh weather. Statoil, the operator of the Troll field, on Wednesday said one worker died, and two were injured after a heavy wave hit the COSL Innovator drilling rig.

COSL Innovator is also under contract to Statoil at the Troll field. The rig had been taken off the well as a result of the bad weather before the incident occurred.

It is unclear if the weather conditions are in any way affecting the drilling operations at the Songa Endurance rig. Offshore Energy Today has reached out to Songa Offshore, asking for more info. We will update the article should we get a response.
