PolyGen’s Volta wave energy device
PolyGen, a UK-based wave energy developer, deployed a full-scale Volta wave energy device at the wave energy test site FaBTest, off Falmouth, Cornwall, in August, 2015. After 100 days at sea, Volta has been retrieved for scheduled inspection and upgrade, and according to PolyGen, performance results of the device look promising.
Sabella’s tidal turbine deployment underway
Sabella, a French tidal energy developer, has deployed its 1 MW D10 tidal turbine in Fromveur Passage, off Ushant Island, France in June, 2015. The turbine has been subsequently connected to the Ushant island’s grid, and has produced first 10 MWh of power by December, 2015.
bioWAVE deployment process
BioPower Systems, an Australian wave energy developer, installed its bioWAVE unit mid-December, 2015, as part of Port Fairy Wave Energy Project. The 250 kW pilot bioWAVE unit is is a 26 m tall oscillating structure designed to sway back-and-forth beneath the ocean swell through an arc of up to 40 degrees. This oscillating motion activates opposing hydraulic cylinders, and the pressurised hydraulic fluid spins a generator to produce electricity.
Italy gets grid-connected wave energy device
40South Energy and Elements Works, Italy-based tidal and wave energy developers, have deployed and grid-connected their H24 wave energy device in November, 2015. According to Michele Grassi, CEO of 40South Energy, the device that is deployed off Tuscany, Italy, has started extracting energy from waves on January 2, 2016.
ISWEC awaits January connection
Wave for Energy, a Turin-based wave energy developer, deployed ISWEC wave energy device off Pantelleria island, Italy, early in August, 2015. The company plans to connect ISWEC to the Italian electricity grid by the end of January, 2016.
