A ship-to-ship LNG transfer is scheduled for the weekend in Scapa Flow, located within the Orkney Islands, off the northeast coast of Scotland.

Fendercare Marine is contracted to conduct the transfer between the Hoegh LNG’s 147 980 cbm Arctic Princess that is due to arrive at Scapa Flow on January 8 and Excelerate Energy’s 138,000 cbm Excelerate that arrived at the location on Wednesday, according to the Orkney Island Council.

Arctic Princess loaded a cargo at Statoil’s Hammerfest LNG facility on the island of Melkoya on Tuesday, January 5.

The transfer operation will be carried out on Friday, January 8 once the two vessels are berthed together in the calm waters of the Scapa Flow, providing ideal conditions.

It is yet unknown where the cargo will end up following the completion of the transfer.

According to the Orkney Island Council’s Harbour Master Brian Archibald , this will be the fourth LNG STS transfer in the Scapa Flow after the first three took place in 2007, 2010 and 2013.

The 2007 operation was the first ever full LNG STS cargo transfer at sea at Scapa Flow, performed by Exmar of Belgium and U.S. Excelerate Energy.
