Following an 8 day tow from Scotland, where it has been on trials since 2013, the Penguin wave energy converter has arrived to Falmouth on January 19, 2016.
Wello Oy’s wave energy converter, the Penguin, departed Kirkwall Hatston Quay in Orkney on the evening of January 11, to travel to Falmouth, in order to prepare for the installation at Wave Hub’s offshore test site this summer.
The device was towed by the Orkney-based marine operator Green Marine.
“Due to careful planning and having an excellent weather window for the passage, the tow was completed successfully within 8 days from departure to arriving safely in Falmouth,” said Jason Schofield , Managing Director of Green Marine.
The Penguin converts the waves to electricity with continuous rotational movement.
In a floating element, motion energy is directly captured by a generator, resulting in conversion from movement to electricity, thus avoiding the need for hydraulics.
