Sotenäs wave energy plant has started delivering power to the Nordic electricity grid following the connection of several buoys to wave energy converters.
The connection of the six-meter diameter buoys to the corresponding linear generator wave energy converters on the seabed represents the final step in bringing each unit on line, according to Seabased.
Sotenäs wave energy plant, developed by Seabased with Fortum and Swedish Energy Agency, comprises 36 Seabased’s wave energy converters with a total capacity of 10 MW.
The first 1 MW of the wave energy farm was connected to the Swedish national grid late in December 2015, following the installation of 120 tonnes subsea generator.
Mats Leijon , Seabased CEO, said: “We are very happy to have come this far and I wish to thank Fortum and the Swedish Energy Agency for their confidence and support all throughout this, sometimes tough, journey.”
The Sotenäs wave energy demonstration farm is located 8 km northwest of Smögen, Sweden.
