Atlantis Resources, an Edinburgh-based tidal energy developer, plans to decommission the SeaGen S tidal device installed at Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland.
Following the acquisition of Marine Current Turbines, together with its seabed rights, existing projects, and intellectual property, which includes the SeaGen S device, in April, 2015, Atlantis has now announced plans to begin with the decommissioning process of the device this year.
Stephen Ward , Atlantis’ Director of Power Generation, said: “The lessons learnt from SeaGen have been used in the development of the next generation of the SeaGen 1MW tidal turbine. This year, we will embark on the next stage of the R&D process and focus on decommissioning the SeaGen device. This operation will be the first commercial scale turbine development to be decommissioned and will help us to understand the complete life-cycle of a tidal stream development.”
SeaGen S 1.2 MW tidal device was installed at Stranford Lough in 2008, and has since generated 10 GWh of electricity from tides. The SeaGen S system consists of twin turbines, 600 kW in capacity each, mounted on a crossbeam. The rotor diameter of each turbine is 16 m.
