Danish oil and gas company Maersk Oil has shared a video showing the construction progress of the wellhead platform (WHP) jacket meant for the company’s Culzean field in the UK North Sea.
The video shows the jacket being rolled up at Heerema’s Vlissingen shipyard in the Netherlands.
Heerema Fabrication Group (HFG), a fabricator of large and complex structures for the offshore oil and gas industry, signed the contract with Maersk Oil to construct jackets for both the central processing facilities platform and the utility & living quarter platform.
On January 16, 2015, Heerema cut the first steel for the Culzean WHP jacket which will be approximately 114 meters tall with a footprint of 31 x 31 m and a top of 22 x 22 m.
The wellhead access deck and access ways will be fabricated in Hartlepool, with the WHP jacket and piles being built at Heerema’s yard in Vlissingen. The total expected scope of the Culzean project for execution at HFG’s yards will represent approximately 7,100 tons fabrication work. Construction is expected to be completed in March 2016.
The Central Processing Facility plus 2 connecting bridges, Wellhead Platform and Utilities & Living Quarters Platform Topsides for the Culzean field development are being built by Sembcorp Marine under a $1 billion contract .
As for the Maersk Oil-operated gas condensate field itself, Culzean was discovered in 2008 and further appraised between 2009 and 2011 by Maersk Oil and its co-venturers.
Production is expected to start in 2019 and continue for at least 13 years. According to Maersk Oil, the total investment for the project is expected to be in excess of £3bn.
