Energy leaders from Canada, Mexico and the United States have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Climate Change and Energy Collaboration.
The MoU was signed during the North American Energy Ministers Meeting on 12 February, when the officials also launched a web platform where North American energy information can be easily accessed in one area.
Under the MoU, Canada, Mexico and the United States agreed to collaborate and share information on six key areas, which comprise, among others, modeling, deploying and accelerating innovation of clean energy technologies, including renewable energy.
Following the signing of the MoU, Jean-François Nolet , Vice President of Policy and Communications at the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA), said: “We’re pleased to see the new Liberal government’s participation in this trilateral collaboration. These signatures kick-off the start of discussions on a North American accord on climate change and clean energy. Today is an important milestone in the global shift to a clean energy economy.
“The MOU reflects a step change in ambition for action in Canada and across North America that will have a tremendous impact on our ability to go beyond reducing greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation. It promises opportunities to move toward the much deeper cuts needed across other sectors that stand to be electrified with clean, zero-carbon renewables like wind energy. The more Canada expands and integrates electricity grids across borders, the more reliable, resilient, cost-effective and competitive our markets become, which means lower costs for Canadians, and more investment, innovation and jobs in the new green economy.”
