Construction of the two 100m dual-fuel ferries for the Clyde and Hebrides network kicked off with the cutting of the first steel at Ferguson Marine Engineering (FMEL).
Owner of the two newbuilds, Caledonian Maritime Assets (CMAL), selected FMEL to build the dual-fuel ferries in September last year while the £97 million shipbuilding contract was signed in October.
Caledonian Maritime Assets said in a statement on Tuesday that FMEL will undertake the detailed design and construction work of the new ‘dual fuel’ vessels in Scotland, as well as their testing, equipping, launching and delivery.
The ferries are designed to carry 127 cars or 16 HGVs or a combination of both and up to 1,000 passengers, CMAL said, adding that both will be able to operate on liquefied natural gas and marine diesel.
The delivery of the first ferry is expected in May 2018 while the second vessel is set to be delivered few months later.
