Malaysian energy giant Petronas held a naming ceremony on Friday for its first floating LNG unit, the PFLNG1, at South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) shipyard in Okpo.
“ Today, we have pushed the boundaries and turned our technological aspirations of having an LNG plant on a floating vessel into reality ,” Datuk Wan Zulkiflee, President and CEO of Petronas said at the naming ceremony.
The unit named PFLNG SATU, which most likely will be the world’s first floating LNG producing facility, is expected to commence operations this year. It will be moored in Kanowit gas field, located 180 kilometres offshore Sarawak, Malaysia and will produce 1.2 million tonnes of LNG per year.
To remind, Petronas delayed the startup of its second FLNG facility as the energy giant is cutting costs in a depressed oil price environment.
“ We have taken the decision to re-phase the Petronas Floating LNG 2 project, to be commissioned at a later date than originally planned ,” Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin said on Monday at a press conference announcing the company’s 2015 results.
