The Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) has just released latest update for the cleanup of lead impacted sediment by hydraulic dredging in the Mill River.
DEEP together with the contractor TRC recently completed the sediment dredging portion of the project and are currently in the on-going process of dewatering the sediment, treating the filtrate water from the dewatering process, and discharging treated water back to the river.
All of the sediment dewatering and water treatment work is occurring at the facility on Exide’s property in Fairfield.
In March the contractors will continue dewatering of sediment and treatment of filtrate at Exide’s property. Monitoring and sampling will also continue, as required by CT DEEP.
The water treatment plant (WTP) will remain at the Exide property, and continue to treat filtrate as the sediment dewaters. The WTP is expected to remain in operation until the dewatered sediment is removed from the Exide property.
Load out of the dewatered sediment (loading of trucks, and trucks transporting dewatered sediment to an off‐site disposal facility) is currently scheduled to begin sometime between March 15th and April 1st of 2016 (weather dependent). Prior to initiation of load out activities, TRC will be on Exide’s property making preparations for these activities to begin.
