Just two weeks after permission was given to begin dumping silt in Whitsand Bay, the maintenance dredging operations in and adjacent to Her Majesty’s Naval Base (HMNB) Devonport in Plymouth already started.

According to Queens Harbor Master Plymouth and Cattewater Harbor Master, dredging operations will take place at Weston Mill Lake, 9 Wharf and the approaches to 5, 6, 7, 8 Wharves and Cattedown Wharves, Cattewater, for about seven days.

This work is being undertaken by the Freeway, Boskalis’ 4,500 m³ trailing suction hopper dredger.

The dredger is allowed to dump the dredged material from high water until two hours before low water, in an attempt to ensure that the silt is carried out to sea, the Plymouth Herald reports.

The dredged material will be disposed at the Rame Head South (PL031) disposal site, according to the Marine Management Organisation.
