The Environment Agency announced today that the Newhaven flood alleviation scheme business case has been approved by its directors.

This allows the Environment Agency to start on the next stage of work which will involve the recruitment of contractors to produce detailed design drawings for the new flood defenses throughout Newhaven.

The Environment Agency has recently submitted a planning application for the scheme based on the existing outline proposals to Lewes district council.

This flood protection program is estimated to cost around £17 million, with the majority of funding coming from the Environment Agency in the form of central government Flood & Coastal Risk Management Grant in Aid.

Construction of the scheme is planned to start in autumn 2016 with the completion scheduled for 2019.
