The first phase of a 17-year program to protect Bournemouth’s coast from erosion is progressing according to schedule.

Bournemouth’s famous golden beach is being replenished in order to replace sand gradually washed away over the years due to coastal erosion.

Crews working on the project will pump a total of 320,000 cubic meters of new beach material onto the beach using specialist equipment with work starting between Bournemouth and Boscombe Piers and then continuing East of Boscombe Pier.

The estimated cost of phase one (2015-2020) is around £17.5 million.

The total cost of the entire project (phases 1-3) is £50 million approximately, with the majority funded by the Environment Agency and a small proportion by the Bournemouth Council funding and local levy.
