Cashman Dredging’s bid has been approved for the approximately $20 million contract to dredge the Intracoastal Waterway from the 17th Street Causeway to Sunrise Boulevard.
This will be the largest project ever undertaken by the Florida Inland Navigation District, a special state taxing district tasked with managing and maintaining the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.
Dredging is expected to begin this summer and be complete in 2 years.
“ Vessels are getting larger, and they can go anywhere in the world ,” said Mark Crosley, executive director of FIND , explaining how this will benefit South Florida’s thriving marine industry.
The deepening project is the result of a successful collaboration between numerous state, county and city agencies. With the recently released $23 million economic impact of the $7 million Dania Cutoff Canal dredging, an even larger economic benefit is expected from this project once it’s completed.
The mission of the Florida Inland Navigation District is to perform the functions of the “local sponsor” of Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway projects in Florida.
In this capacity the district provides all lands required for the navigation project including rights of way and lands for the management of dredged materials removed from the waterway during dredging activities.
