Oil and gas company Statoil has contracted Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks (ASN), now part of Nokia, to conduct a concept study of the integration of ASN’s direct current, fiber optical (DC/FO) technology as subsea control infrastructure for the Johan Castberg field in the Barents Sea.
The DC/FO technology is a solution developed and qualified in cooperation with Statoil, and has now been selected by Statoil for implementation at the Johan Castberg field, pending completed qualification and commercial agreement.
Alcatel-Lucent said this technology would bring power and high-bandwidth communication connections to submerged equipment.

Earlier in 2016 , Statoil contracted Aker Solutions to provide a concept study for a floating, production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel for the Johan Castberg oil field development in the Barents Sea.
