ACEP’s Alaska Hydrokinetic Energy Research Center (AHERC) team is preparing to conduct multiple tests set to take place at the Tanana River test site, Alaska, this summer.

The team will be testing the technology from Canada-based hydrokinetic developer New Energy.

The company’s 5 kW hydrokinetic turbine, based on the vertical axis cross flow concept, will be deployed to measure power output characteristics and energy storage techniques to convert river energy into usable electricity, Alaska Center for Energy and Power (ACEP) informed on social media.

In addition to testing the 5 kW turbine, AHERC will be working with the UAF School of Fisheries and Ocean Science (SFOS), and Alaska Department of Fish and Game on an ongoing fish study to determine the hazards of an in-river turbine on migrating salmon populations.

The Alaska Center for Energy and Power (ACEP), based at the University of Alaska, is dedicated to applied energy research and testing focused on lowering the cost of energy throughout Alaska and developing economic opportunities for the State, its residents, and its industries.
