Engie, EDP Renewables, Caisse des Dépôts and Eiffage last week submitted their proposal for a pilot floating wind farm of up to 36MW in capacity at the Leucate site in the Mediterranean.

The proposal includes installation of 3 to 6 wind turbines of a minimum of 6MW each some 15 to 22 kilometres off the coast in the Gulf of Lion.

The turbines will be joined with an integrated semi-submersible type floating foundation, the basis of which is the WindFloat concept developed by Principle Power in its Aix-en-Provence engineering center.

The joint venture plans to employ local businesses to provide the main components of the project’s pre-commercial facilities. The region’s port infrastructure will be used for assembly and maintenance operations and will provide the main components of the pre-commercial facilities.

Engie has released this infographic to provide further information on the position of the wind farm, the size of its components, as well as the benefits provided by floating wind farms.
