Saipem’s semi-submersible drilling rig Scarabeo 5, built at the Fincantieri Shipyard in Italy in 1990, will have to wait some more before it starts working for Statoil again.

Namely, Norwegian oil and gas company Statoil reportedly decided to prolong a suspension period for Saipem’s semi-sub drilling rig.

The rig is under a contract with the Norwegian company until 2017, but the contract has been suspended several times now.

Due to overcapacity in Statoil’s rig portfolio, the rig was suspended from autumn 2014 until the remainder of that year. The rig’s contract was suspended once again in July 2015 until March 1, 2016.

According to Offshore.no , Statoil made a decision to put Scarabeo 5’s contract on hold until August.

Offshore Energy Today reached out to Statoil seeking confirmation of these reports.

In an e-mailed statement, Statoil’s spokesperson confirmed that the suspension for Scarabeo 5 has been extended until August 1, 2016.
