The maintenance dredging operations at the Port of Foynes are scheduled to begin today, according to the Shannon Foynes Port Company (SFPC).

The dredging works will be undertaken by the SFPC’s multicat Shannon 1.

Operations will be conducted by using a plough, and will be located within the Port of Foynes, including the West and East Jetties and the turning basin, the SFPC said.

The Damen’s multicat, owned and operated by the SFPC, is used as a mulit-purpose workboat which includes servicing of navigational aids as well as routine silt removal in the various ports along the length of the Shannon Estuary.

The SFPC plans over time to be able to accommodate 80,000 tonnes capacity vessels, the world’s largest cargo vessels to unload at Foynes, making it one of the few ports in Europe capable of handling these massive ships.
