Black & Veatch has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with SBS for the development of commercial-scale tidal current projects in Indonesia.

The MoU was facilitated by the recent BKPM trade summit, held in London, and attended by the Indonesian president and senior ministers from both Indonesia and Great Britain.

This MoU follows the one SBS signed with Atlantis Resources at the same occasion, for the development of 150 MW tidal stream sites located in the Bali Strait and Lombok Strait, off Indonesia, with the first 12 MW phase of the tidal stream site expected to be operational by 2018.

Tim Baker , Technical Director at Black & Veatch, said: “The UK’s tidal current energy technology expertise is among the most advanced in the world. We are delighted SBS has selected Black & Veatch to help use it for the benefit of communities in Indonesia.”

Michael Spencer , SBS Group Chairman and CEO, said: “Black & Veatch has more than 40 years experience delivering energy projects in Indonesia and I am delighted with the support provided by Tim and his team during the feasibility study phase. As a result, I am confident Black & Veatch’s world-class input will greatly enhance the quality of our engineering deliverables on this project and we look forward to working with them throughout the development engineering and turbine manufacturing phases.”

To remind, SBS has completed a feasibility study for the project which will be supported by a 25-year power purchase agreement with the state-owned electricity company, Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN).

Black & Veatch is a US-based consulting, engineering, construction, operations and program management company.
