France’s Loire-Atlantique prefecture has granted approval for the construction of the 480MW Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm.

The approval allows for the official start of the construction phase, and establishes the conditions for the installation and operation of the offshore wind farm which is being jointly developed by EDF-EN, Dong Energy, the Lorient-based Nass & Wind Offshore, and GE.

The wind farm will be situated 12km offshore and will cover an area of 78 square kilometers.

It will comprise 80 6MW Haliade 150 turbines built in the GE factory in Saint-Nazaire.

The farm is anticipated to go into operation at the beginning of 2020.

The Nantes-Saint Nazaire Port has started a EUR 10 million project to build a 15-hectare logistic hub dedicated to the pre-assembly of the offshore turbines and the farm’s construction.
