Following completion of pre-deployment preparations, Protean Wave Energy has announced the imminent deployment of the first Protean wave energy converter (WEC) buoy at Port of Bunbury, Western Australia.
The multi-buoy demonstration wave farm represents a key step in the commercialisation of the Protean technology, with the deployment of the first WEC anticipated to take place in the coming days.
The wave farm will be deployed progressively, with the deployment of 3 Protean WECs as part of the Stage 1, and ultimately leading to the total of 30 buoys.
The wave farm will be in operation for a maximum period ending September 30, 2016, during which time Protean will collect performance and environmental data, the company informed.
The performance data will be reviewed with a view to optimisation of the system design and refinement of the key inputs into a pre-feasibility study (PFS), which targets deployment of the Protean’s first commercial pilot wave farm.
Protean stated that the initial evaluation of the performance data for Stage 1 will inform the decision regarding whether a second stage deployment of additional buoys at Port of Bunbury is required for PFS inputs.
