France-based company DCNS has filed a permit application to construct tidal turbines assembly plant in Cherbourg, Normandy.

A 5500 m2 assembly plant, to be built on 25 hectares of Associated Normandy Ports-owned property, will be first used for the production of 7 OpenHydro’s tidal energy turbines for the Raz Blanchard pilot tidal farm DCNS is developing with EDF.

The assembly facility, expected to be constructed next year, will also produce the turbines for the future commercial farms planned for Raz Blanchard and Alderney.

The workshop will have a production capacity of 25 turbines a year, with the planned expansion work on the factory that is expected to bring the production up to 50 turbines per year.

To remind, in December 2014, the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) selected DNCS and EDF to develop pilot tidal turbine array off the coast of Normandy.

It will consist of 7 tidal energy turbines developed by OpenHydro, with a power output of 2 MW per unit. The array is expected to be connected to the power grid in 2018.
