The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, together with the New York and New Jersey Harbor, is about to begin the final phase of a $2.1 billion dredging project that will deepen the port’s channels to a depth of 50 feet.
According to the Corps, USACE will in the next two weeks begin the final phase of the dredging operation that it expected to be completed within next couple of months.
Many of the channels have already been dredged to a depth of 50 feet, but there is still some more work left to be done on the Ambrose and Anchorage channels.
The overall project includes 21 dredging contracts and construction of four marsh restoration projects. Twenty dredging contracts have been awarded with 19 physically complete and one underway.
The last contract, involving the removal of material in utility corridors and other shoals in the Anchorage and Port Jersey Channels, will be completed by the end of this summer.
The New York and New Jersey Harbor is a major shipping port and center of commerce, and key navigation channels require deepening to meet the growing demands of the port. The Port of New York and New Jersey is the nation’s third largest container port, indirectly and directly supporting more than 230,000 jobs in the region.
