The Port of Galway is still waiting for an official decision from An Bord Pleanala on the proposed multi million euro harbor extension plan.

The planning application for the €126 million worth port expansion project was submitted in January 2014, almost two and a half years ago.

According to the Galway Independent, An Bord Pleanala announced earlier this week that they will be holding meetings with the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the port regarding the issue, but did not disclose the date of the meetings.

The proposed extension of the harbor at Renmore and Townparks Townlands is a four-phase development that involves reclaiming 27 hectares from the foreshore and the sea in Galway Bay to the south of the existing Galway Harbor Enterprise Park.

The proposed development also includes: quay walls, breakwaters and wave walls to create commercial quays and a deep water docking facility, extending southwards into Galway Bay; dredging to create a new approach channel to the commercial quays and deep water docking facility berths; and construction of new oil and bitumen transfer pipelines, road improvements, rail link, harbor related buildings and landscaped areas.

If the decision is reached to proceed with the project, works on the phase 1 could begin before the end of 2017 with the completion in 2020.
