Becker Marine Systems said its LNG hybrid barge, “The Hummel” is entering its second season of service in the port of Hamburg.
According to the company’s statement, the LNG hybrid barge will be supplying power to AIDA Cruises ship, the AIDAsol that has already made three calls at the Hafencity terminal since the middle of May.
By October 2016, the cruise ship will have made a total of sixteen stops at the port.
Becker Marine’s LNG hybrid barge has started operations with the beginning of the cruise ship season.
“Due to some restrictions making the work more difficult, we are continuing to seek a mutual solution together with the relevant authorities,” said Dirk Lehmann , Managing Director of Becker Marine Systems.
The solution would enable the LNG hybrid barge to supply power to cruise ships during their layovers at port beyond the current year. Additionally, the company intends to provide power to container ships, bulkers and tankers, the statement reads.
The operations of the Hummel will be the responsibility of Hybrid Port Energy, the operating company and a subsidiary of Becker Marine Systems.
Lehman added, “discussions with the Port of Rotterdam for the implementation of another barge are already well under way.“
Becker Marine has already signed a memorandum of understanding with the Dutch towage operator Kotug and Shell for the sale of another LNG hybrid barge.
The vessel would be deployed in the port of Rotterdam from June 2017, with commercial, technical and operational management provided by Kotug.
