Multi-role vessel STOUR is on charter for Marine Civil engineering contractors BAM Nuttall in Brighton where work is underway to construct a temporary sheet piled cofferdam inside the entrance to Brighton marina.

STOUR was loaded with a 25t long reach excavator in Poole, at Jenkins Marine yard, and steamed to Brighton.

She was then precisely positioned using her self elevating spud legs and the excavator is now being used from her deck to excavate a trench within which the sheet piles will be driven.

The sheet piles will be driven as a double wall, about 10m wide, which will then be filled with marine dredged sand and ballast. This makes it essential that the overburden of silts be removed in advance.

Once this element is complete, the excavator will be tracked off STOUR on to the adjacent foreshore, enabled by STOUR’s ultra-shallow draft (less than 1m at the bow). A Jack-up barge has also been mobilized from nearby Shoreham port for the construction of the sheet piling.

STOUR was also used to assist the arrival and positioning of the jack up, and will be able to move and re-position it as work progresses, using her own spud legs to secure her location, while waiting for the jack up to lower her own legs.
