BP’s Norwegian subsidiary, BP Norge, has received consent from the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) to remove the top deck of the Ekofisk 2/4-G platform, offshore Norway.
PSA stated on Thursday that it gave BP consent to remove the platform with activities scheduled to start in June 2016.
ConocoPhillips-operated Ekofisk is an oil field lying in 70-75 meters of water in the southern North Sea and was the first field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf to come into production.
The Ekofisk 2/4-G, under the Valhall license, was a riser platform tying the BP-operated Valhall field to Ekofisk. Two 20″ pipelines ran between Valhall and Ekofisk, one for oil and one for gas. From Ekofisk, the oil was transported on to Teesside and the gas to Emden.
The 2/4-G platform was installed in 1982 and taken out of service as part of Ekofisk II in 1998. Both the removal and impact assessment plan was approved by the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy in December 2015.
