The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Alaska District, has just completed the annual Dillingham Small Boat Harbor maintenance dredging project.

According to the Harbormaster Jean Barrett, USACE is removing more and more material from the harbor bottom every year.

In an interview to a local news channel, Barrett said that warmer winters experienced over past years are bringing up the mud and silt levels in the harbor.

” Three years ago we pumped around 97,000 cubic yards out of here. Last year it was 113,000 cubic yards and I think this year it’s going to be up (around) 126,000 cubic yards ,” said Barrett.

Dredged material from the harbor was formerly placed at upland disposal sites, but after the available upland disposal sites reached capacity the Corps switched to in-water disposal at the Nushagak Bay.
