Cape Sharp Tidal is preparing to deploy the first OpenHydro tidal turbine in the Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia.

The image shows the first 2 MW OpenHydro tidal turbine towed out to the sea for the first time, according to Cape Sharp Tidal.

The joint venture created by Emera and OpenHydro, Cape Sharp Tidal had plans to deploy the depicted turbine later this month, but due to the complains by the local fishermen association the company decided to postpone the deployment to conduct more consultations.

Both turbines for the project, as well as the barge for the installation of the turbines, are built by the Aecon Group in its facility in Pictou, Nova Scotia.

Each turbine is 16 m in diameter and 20 m in height, with the weight of 1,000 tonnes, and once installed they’re expected to power 1,000 homes.
