Dutch institute for applied research for water, subsurface and infrastructure, Deltares, is developing modeling tools to be used by Tidal Lagoon Power for optimal design of future tidal lagoons.
In addition to the proposed Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon, the developer behind the project, Tidal Lagoon Power (TLP), is using Deltares’ software to optimize the design of future full-scale tidal lagoons – two of which are located the Liverpool Bay area in West Cumbria and North Wales, and further three in the Severn Estuary off Cardiff, Newport and in Bridgwater Bay.
According to Deltares, TLP is using its software package Delft3D, to estimate the marine conditions at these new sites.
Since Delft3D cannot predict the energy production of the power station directly, Deltares will couple the Delft3D software with the Wanda 4 software package, which contains representative modules to model turbines and turbine energy production, the research institute informed.
To facilitate this, Deltares will develop a coupling module, which allows these two hydraulic software packages to communicate, resulting in a package expected to enhance TLP’s power output modelling.
To remind, Deltares already collaborated with TLP by testing the hydrodynamic efficiency of the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon design.
