The first Cape Sharp Tidal turbine and the Scotia Tide barge will arrive in the Halifax Harbour today where its steel subsea base will be ballasted with concrete.

The ballasting will be done by Dartmouth-based RMI Marine, and the work will take place at the Richmond Terminal, Cape Sharp Tidal informed.

Hundreds of tonnes of concrete will be poured into the subsea base using cables connected to underwater valves, and the work is expected to last for about ten days.

The subsea base, often referred to as ‘gravity’ base, will hold the turbine resting on the sea floor under its own weight. There is no drilling, mooring or need for substrate preparation at the FORCE berth site, according to Cape Sharp Tidal.

The turbine is being towed from the Pictou Shipyard by the Atlantic Towing vessel, the Atlantic Fir.
