The next phase of the Shark River dredging project that will allow safe navigation in the state channel has finally got underway.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredge Currituck moved to the Shark River Inlet, in Belmar (NJ) on July 1st.
According to the USCG notice, the vessels will be conducting dredging operations at the entrance of the inlet until July 15, 2016.
The $7.6 million contract to dredge state channels in the Shark River in Monmouth County was awarded to Mobile Dredging and Pumping Co. back in 2015.
Phase one of the project began late last year and the dredging officially ended on Monday, January 11.
During the works, approximately 4,000 cubic yards of dredge material was removed during a short window allowed by the National Marine Fisheries.
In total, the project requires dredging over 102,000 cubic yards of sediment comprised of sand and silt that should be completed by the end of 2016.
