Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. (Boskalis) has released an interesting video showing capabilities of cutter suction dredgers.
Dredging with a cutter suction dredger takes place while the vessel is moored with spuds or anchors and consists of powerful cutting action combined with suction.
Cutter suction dredgers are used where the ground is too hard for trailing suction hopper dredgers. CSDs are mainly used for constructing and expanding ports and navigational channels and for pipeline trenching in the seabed.
Dredged material is either used for land reclamation or disposed of by barge or by pumping it ashore through a pipeline.
Boskalis has around 20 cutter suction dredgers.
