EU funds open sea testing of ocean energy technology
EU has launched an €11 million initiative that will provide funding support to ocean energy technology developers to access Europe’s world-leading ocean energy test facilities. The FORESEA (Funding Ocean Renewable Energy through Strategic European Action) initiative will unite European ocean energy test centres to help demonstration of tidal, wave and offshore wind energy technologies in real-sea conditions.
Tocardo sets eyes on Bay of Fundy
Dutch-based Tocardo Tidal Turbines has teamed up with Minas Energy, and International Marine Energy, to test its tidal technology in the Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia. The companies have formed Minas Tidal Limited Partnership to test Tocardo’s floating platform equipped with four 250kW bi-directional turbines in Minas Passage by late 2017.
Sabella retrieves D10 tidal turbine
French tidal energy developer, Sabella, has retrieved its D10 tidal turbine from the bottom of the Fromveur Strait, off Ushant island, France. Sabella now plans to check various components of D10 tidal turbine and implement first optimizations, and to replace the part of defective cable that was damaged during the installation of the turbine in 2015 to conduct a new series of tests at turbine’s maximum power capacity. The new testing campaign of Sabella’s D10 is scheduled to begin this fall.
Tidal energy vessel deployed in British Columbia
Water Wall Turbine (WWT) has deployed its floating tidal turbine plant to Dent Island Lodge in British Columbia, Canada. The anchored floating structure has a large turbine that could provide up to 1MW of tidal energy power. Over the summer, it is expected that the submarine cable will be laid and commissioning of the entire system will be completed.
Lloyd’s Register certifies WaveRoller
Lloyd’s Register has awarded its first Technology Qualification certificate to a developer of ocean energy technology, AW-Energy from Finland, after more than two years of cooperation. Lloyd’s Register’s Technology Qualification has a major role to play in the commercialization of young and new components, processes or systems with a lack of historical data.
