Vera Navis of Portugal on Monday said it won the production engineering contract to build two LNG-powered ferries for the shipowner Caledonian Maritime Assets.

The contract agreed in May 2016 between Vera Navis and Ferguson Marine Engineering, encompasses the production engineering of two 100-metre ferries built at Port Glasgow, which can accommodate 127 cars or 16 HGV’s or a combination of both and up to 1000 passengers, Vera Navis said in its statement.

The company was selected as the preferred detail design partner by Ferguson Marine Engineering.

FMEL signed the deal to build the two LNG-powered ferries in October last year, valued at £97 million. Both vessels are expected to be in service for over 30 years, following delivery.

The first ferry is expected to enter service in early 2018, with the second vessel following a few months later.
