BP’s British Merchant with a 135,500-cbm capacity is the second liquefied natural gas carrier to pass trough the expanded Panama Canal on Tuesday.

The tanker is carrying a cargo of the chilled fuel from Trinidad and Tobago to Mexico.

Following the inauguration of the expanded Panama Canal connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, British Merchant was reported as the first LNG carrier scheduled to transit the new locks.

However, the 161,870-cbm Maran Gas Apollonia , chartered by the Hague-based LNG giant Shell was the first LNG carrier to transit the canal on July 25. The vessel is transporting a cargo from Cheniere’s Sabine Pass liquefaction plant to China.

A third tanker is expected to transit the canal in early August.
