Focal Technologies has been awarded a contract to supply Scotrenewables Tidal Power with a 6.6kV electrical slip ring that will be used for SR2000 tidal turbine.

The Focal 6.6kV slip ring transmits 2MW of power and control signals across the turret mooring system to the export cable on the seabed, while an integrated absolute rotary encoder facilitates disconnection/connection operations between the SR2000 and the mooring system, according to Focal.

The SR2000, with a capacity of 2MW, utilizes a mooring system that allows the tidal generator to weathervane about the mooring point to maintain a heading into the tidal stream to maximize power generation efficiency.

Shawn Taylor, Sales and Business Development Manager for Moog Focal, said: “We are very pleased to be supporting Scotrenewables on their SR2000 platform with our marine rotary offerings. It is certainly exciting to be designing and delivering technologies which are helping companies like Scotrenewables make reliable tidal energy solutions a reality.”

As reported earlier, Scotrenewables SR2000 tidal turbine was launched in Belfast in May this year. The turbine subsequently underwent sea trials at the Belfast Lough, before it was towed to the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney to commence a grid connected test programme.

The turbine will go live in the next three months following its connection to the grid, Focal informed.

Focal Technologies, a Moog company, specializes in providing electrical slip rings, fiber optic rotary joints, hydraulic utility swivels and fiber optic multiplexer solutions for the worldwide marine industry.
