The Kornwerderzand tidal energy project, part of the overhaul project of the Afsluitdijk dam, has received a €5.6 million grant for the installation of 18 tidal energy turbines at the sluice gates on the dam.

The Kornwerderzand project will see the installation of an array of three turbines in six of the ten total sluice gates at the Afsluitdijk dam.

Each of the six arrays will be comprised of three T1 tidal turbines from the Dutch tidal turbine manufacturer Tocardo, with the total capacity of 1.8MW – enough to power 600 Dutch households.

Piet Ackermans , from Antea Grup, said: “This is a huge boost for the further development of energy from water. We can now demonstrate full-scale technology and learn about the effects and results.”

The grant has been awarded in equal shares through Wadden Fund, and Atsma Fund, Antea Group informed.

The turbines must be in operation by 2018, according to Antea Group, before the beginning of the overhaul of the Afsluitdijk dam.

The overhaul of the 33km long Afsluitdijk dam is one of the biggest civil projects in the Netherlands and is led by the Dutch state, provinces and municipalities.
