A sail away ceremony for the floating storage unit (FSU) Armada LNG Mediterrana was held in Singapore on Monday. The FSU will be dispatched in the coming days to Malta where it will be deployed at the Delimara LNG regasification terminal and power station.
Bumi Armada won the US$300 million LNG FSU project contract in 2015 from ElectroGas Malta, marking its first entrance in the floating LNG segment. The project included the conversion of MOL’s 125,000-cbm MOSS carrier Wakabu Maru into a FSU.
Keppel shipyard was awarded the LNG FSU conversion contract from Bumi Armada. The conversion of the vessel lasted for 17 months.
According to Bumi Armada, the FSU will deliver LNG during the entire project life of 18 years, to the onshore regasification plant feeding natural gas to the 400 MW power station.
“The conversion job has been lauded by experts who explained that the FSU has the highest levels of security standards and will provide a temporary, yet reliable, supply of gas. The Armada LNG Mediterrana is expected to arrive in Malta in September,” a statement by the Government of Malta said on Monday.
“ This will be the project which will not only complete the turnaround of Malta’s energy sector, but which will be also ensuring that our electricity prices remain low and sustainable; that our electricity supply, at the periphery of the European continent, remains secure, and which meets the ever-growing electricity demand which reflects an ever-growing and strong Maltese economy ,” said Prime Minister Joseph Muscat , who presided over the sail away ceremony.
