The open sea testing activities for the OCEANIC Project have begun at the bimep test site, off Armintza, Spain.

The international consortium for the OCEANIC Project aims to develop ecologically friendly solutions for the corrosion and fouling protection of wave energy converters.

The company Recubrimientos Mikra, with GAIKER-IK4 and IK4-AZTERLAN Metallurgical Technical Centre, and WavEC have coordinated the beginning of a simultaneous testing plan both at the Biscay Marine Energy Platform (bimep) and in the OWC Pico wave energy power plant on the Azores Island, Portugal, in order to ensure that the proposed solutions behave properly in the open sea.

During the next two years, several protection alternatives are to be tested and improved, all of them specifically thought for their use on the outer skin WECs, according to IK4-AZTERLAN.

The deployment of this testing plan has been supported by SPRI, EVE, SWEA, CDTI and FCT, through OCEANERA-NET.
